On the west coast, Alcatraz was used as the western Ellis Island until they moved those functions to Fort Mason in San Francisco's Marina district.

As for Immigration Controls, they were largely nonexistent during the first 75 years or so of this country.

My family got here from Scotland in the 1600s and just grabbed some land in what is now New Hampshire. This was not unusual at the time...

This is a part of history I need to read more about. Are you from NH? One of my best friends is in Kittery. I used to make frequent trips to New Hampshire when I lived in New England. Such a beautiful state

I was born here in CA. NH is where my family first settled and gradually spread out. My Great Grandfather first moved here with his mother and brother (and their wives) in the late 19th century...

I have a deeper understanding and respect for the importance of history teachers and historians generally in the past few years. I think it really hit me when I heard that catchy phrase, "alternative facts". Lies will never be facts.
